Russia Begins Military Operation in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region in a move he said was aimed at protecting civilians that didn’t include plans to occupy Russia’s smaller neighbor.
President Biden called Mr. Putin’s move an unprovoked, unjustified attack in Ukraine, pledging further action against Russia.

“The invasion has begun,” a Ukrainian official said, adding that the capital, Kyiv, has been targeted by missile strikes.

Several distant explosions could be heard in the center of Kyiv after 5 a.m. Thursday. Eyewitnesses reported explosions in the eastern city of Kharkiv and several other cities.
Ukraine had already shifted to a war footing, declaring a state of emergency, beginning to mobilize reservists and calling on its citizens to leave Russia immediately in the midst of warnings of an imminent full-scale invasion.
